The Audio Therapy take...

Plixir Elite BDC 12v 2 Amp Power Supply

The PLiXiR Elite BDC balanced DC power supply is designed to reduce all the noise types present in a DC power supply. Upon deep studies it is apparent that traditional DC power supply circuit cannot eliminate them all.  These include Ground loop current and diode rectification/pollution noise.

This Plixir Power Supply is 12V 2 amps has a single outlet on the rear for powering one device. It can be used to power many different devices such as a Melco N100, Melco S100, Melco D100.  When replacing the basic 12V DC supply that comes in the box with an N100 or S100 the step up in performance is quite obvious.

Streaming Qobuz to the Vitus RI-101 mk2 DAC module via the S100 always sounds excellent, but with the S100 powered by a BDC the presentation had a really nice uplift in clarity, there was more detail and resolution but it was never forced in the way it was presented. Running with this BDC in place for a few days and switching back to the S100’s standard supply and the differences were quite obvious. A Vitus RI-101 and an S100 never sounds poor to be fair, but it was certainly more enjoyable and engaging with the BDC in play.

Lastly I connected a Melco N100 to a Gold Note DS-10 DAC (via USB), connected to 2 Gold Note PA-10 power amplifiers and to be fair it was simply more of the same. With the BDC connected up the N100 become more open sounding with better resolution, the improvement had as much to do with what you couldn’t hear as what you could, that old hi-fi cliche of an inky black background was very evident here and the soundstage become more solid and 3 dimensional. In the context of a £2000 Melco being used with a £2300 DAC the £595 power supply is a really cost effective upgrade.

Plixir’s ground-up approach begins with a balanced AC power design, along with a two-stage voltage regulation consisting of an open-loop first-stage pre-regulator and a close-loop feedback second stage. Their unique balanced AC power circuit effectively removes ground loop noise and reduces the diode noise.

The first stage pre-regulation filters the bulk of the noise, specifically the high-frequency noise, and the heat from the second stage voltage regulator. The 2 stage regulation design as a “gate” to prevent the downstream noise from crossing back to the AC power hands.
