The Audio Therapy take...
T+A R2500R Multi Source Receiver
The R2500R is a classic one box solution, it delivers outstanding performance and you simply just need to add a pair of loudspeakers and give it a network connection.
This is one of T+A’s first products to have access to their brand new third generation streaming architecture. As well as allowing access to streaming services and USB in the conventional way this new architecture allows the R2500R to be controlled directly from apps such as Tidal Connect and Spotify Connect.
The R2500R is unmistakably part of their R Series and with the addition of a couple of VU meters it almost has a bit of retro feel about it.
Build quality and fit and finish is exactly what we’ve come to expect from T+A, no corners have been cut, the hand brushed aluminium finish looks superb.
With 140 watts per channel into 8 ohms (rising to 250 watts into 4 ohms) it has more than enough more and current delivery to drive most loudspeakers quite easily,
The DAC onboard has a separate 1 bit chipset for dealing with DSD directly to ensure files are playback correctly and natively. On the PCM side there are 8 x 32 bit BurrBrown converters onboard.
From a streaming perspective the R2500R covers a lot of ground, once you have given it a network connection (wired or wireless, but wired is always better) it opens up a huge amount of options
Spotify (including Spotify Connect), Tidal (including Tidal Connect), Qobuz, Deezer, Amazon Music HD, HighResAudio, Roon Ready, Audirvana, UPnP, Internet Radio, Podcasts and Apple Airplay 2
There is also a slot loading CD player, a USB B input for Melco, Aurender, Innous etc, there 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output (with ARC) so connecting a TV, Sky Box and PS5 is no issue, DAB and FM radio are also on board.
There is also 2 x optical inputs, 1 x SPDIF inputs and analogue users are catered for also, with 2 pairs of RCA inputs and 1 XLR input.
If you’ve read this far you can see that the feature list of the R2500R is rather exhaustive, in performance terms it packs an incredible punch as well. It is incredibly transparent and open, with great weight and scale. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were listening to something that costs substantially more than the asking price. In a world where lots of people are wanting to downsize from classic British system with 4, 5 or 6 boxes down to something more manageable the R2500R is in a unique place in that it’s one box and there is genuinely very little to criticise it for sonically.
